Fathoms ... An Oral Histories Project With The Fishing Community in New Bedford 2003-4
Calling for participants:
FATHOMS is an Oral Histories Project about the fishing community in New Bedford, Massachusetts, funded by Island Foundation and Sailor's Snug Harbor, and led by Culture*Park. Oral Histories are actual stories and insights provided by those who have experienced first-hand the lifestyle being explored. Culture*Park is collecting stories nowand throughout spring, 2004, about the fishing community of Greater New Bedford. They will be an important and effective way to preserve and share reflections from people who are actively or otherwise involved in the New Bedford fishing community. Without these oral histories, others may never know the true stories of those who have devoted their lives and careers to a livelihood from the sea. Participants will be interviewed, and their interviews will be preserved as a video-documentary. Writers will work to script the stories into a play, which will be performed by actors in September, 2004, at the first New Bedford Working Waterfront Festival, among other venues near and far. Without input from people willing to share, this important historical preservation project could not happen. Please share your fishing stories with FATHOMS, and pass this information along to someone you know who might want to participate, whether they are a fishing man or woman, a spouse or offspring or family member, or someone connected to fishing in some other significant way, perhaps through the industry. Remember, we hope to preserve and portray a range of experiences and voices through FATHOMS, an oral histories project about the fishing life, past and present, of Greater New Bedford.
