Through a Portagee Gate was first performed as a staged reading on September 25, 2004, at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, College of Visual and Performing Arts recital hall room 153. It was adapted from the memoir by Charles Reis Felix and directed by Patricia A. Thomas, and performed with the following ensemble:

Through a Portagee Gate was developed to a full-length play at Culture*Park Theatre in New Bedford, Massachusetts, sponsored by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Center for Portuguese Studies & Culture. Adapted by Patricia A. Thomas, the play was performed at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Main Auditorium on April 29 and 30, 2006, with the following cast:

Through a Portagee Gate toured Massachusetts in 2007-2008, sponsored by the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities. The opening performance of the tour was as part of the Escrita da Vida Colloquium and Reading Series featuring works by contemporary Portuguese American writers and was presented in the main hall at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston on September 22, 2007, with the following cast:

The play was directed by Patricia A. Thomas. The Production Manager and Designer was Rebecca Schade. The Stage Manager was Maurene Walker. Costume Design was by Niko Tarini. Original music for the Radio Ensemble was written by Patricia A. Thomas. Translation from the English to Portuguese was by João Ferreira.
